Chapter Sixteen

Kellar supposed a time might come when she’d be so jaded that attending an after party wouldn’t interest her, but it hadn’t happened yet. Of course, this was only the third one she’d been to, but she kind of loved celebrity watching.

She lost count of the number of famous people she’d met, actors, actresses, directors, and producers as well as musicians and cinematographers.

After each party she made notes about the event, the people, the food, what she wore, and any other details she might need for future reference.

She’d heard, “I loved your book” so often she’d begun to doubt that any of the partygoers had actually read it. No one told her they thought the book was good, and after Day’s speech before the Golden Globes, that would have meant more to her. Those who gushed about her book probably only wanted to stay in Day’s good graces, because no one knew when there might be a role available in one of his upcoming films. Especially now that he had formed his own production company.

Even though she knew it would be a logistical nightmare, Kellar set her glass of champagne aside and excused herself to visit the ladies’ room. At least this swank Beverly Hills hotel had the forethought to include plenty of floor space and extra-large stalls in their restrooms.

The minute Kellar walked in she saw Willow Thorne touching up her lip color in front of one of the sinks. Their eyes met. Kellar smiled and said, “Hello, Willow.” They’d met for a second time at another event a few weeks ago.

Willow gave her a cool nod, the corners of her mouth doing something that passed for a one-second smile before she returned her attention to her reflection.

This wasn’t surprising. From the first, Kellar knew she and Willow were never going to be friends. She didn’t get the sense that it was because Willow was jealous, however. She’d even broached the subject with Day.

“Willow and I have been friends for a long time,” he’d told her. “She’s protective, that’s all. Aren’t you protective of your friends?”

“You don’t need protection from me, though. She’s aware of the nature of our relationship.”

“Of course.”

“But she doesn’t believe you?”

Day lay back against the limo’s plush seat and closed his eyes. “It’s more complicated than that.”

“Complicated? How? Because you were once involved with her?”

He opened one eye and patted her hand. “No. Just give it time. Willow will come around.”

“I can’t wait,” Kellar said, not bothering to hide her irritation at Day’s inadequate explanation. “Then we can all be just friends.”

“Exactly.”

After their first encounter, Kellar spent hours researching Willow Thorne. For someone at her level of fame, she rarely granted interviews. When she did, her personal life was off limits.

Most photographs of her came from awards show red carpets, publicity shots for the films she’d been in, and magazine features. The occasional paparazzi shot appeared, usually of her leaving the gym or a restaurant alone or with a companion. Several times the companion was Day, but nothing about those pictures suggested they were involved.
